Here at Maji Magic we pride ourselves in providing active fun for kids and grown ups alike. We like to call it disguised exercise. Our vision as a company is to get kids in particular, off their computers, consoles and phones and get them plugged into the outdoors.
Too many activity offerings available in Nairobi at the moment involve unplugging your child (or even yourself) from one entertainment system and plugging them into another one at an arcade gallery or on to an electric buggy that doesn’t give them any physical stimulation.
The statistics released by the American Academy of Pediatrics AAP are shocking to say the least. The new policy statement was released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states the following:
“During 2018 the average 8-year-old spent eight hours a day using various forms of media, and teenagers often surpassed 11 hours of media consumption daily, according to the authors of the AAP statement. More than three quarters of teenagers have cell phones, and teens ages 13 to 17 send an average of 3,364 texts per month.”
Some of the stand out findings AAP go on to highlight are rather alarming, the effects of too much screen time are as follows:
“Elementary school-age children who watch TV or use a computer more than two hours per day are more likely to have emotional, social, and attention problems. Excessive TV viewing has even been linked to increased bullying behavior.”
“Screen time before bed can backfire. The light emitted from screens interferes with the sleep cycle in the brain and can lead to insomnia.”
“Elementary school-age children who have televisions in their bedrooms do worse on academic testing.”
So, what is recommended?
The official daily recommendation is 2 hours of screen on time a day for children. It is not only the children but also parents who should also limit themselves. Especially during family times where first hand engagement is paramount.
The NHS in the UK have a great page that recommend in detail how much exercise kids between the age or 5 -18 should be getting every day (Physical activity guidelines for kids). A summary of this is as follows:
1 hr of exercise a day of which at least once a week this activity should include:
- aerobic exercise
- exercises to strengthen their bones
- exercises to strengthen their muscles
The great news we have for you is that a session on the Maji Magic Aqua Park caters for all these three areas at once. We have over 40 obstacles each with its own challenges that promote the three above types of exercise. Climbing frames, trampolines and wobbly walk ways all work really well in developing a healthy lifestyle and coordination.
In addition to this it is a great way to bond with your kids without the distraction of screens. Mobiles are not allowed on the Aqua Park! If you are looking for Nairobi’s latest family outing that is both a lot of fun and also good for everyone’s health, then look no further and pay us a visit at Maji Magic Aqua Park.
